  1. Political alliance of liberals, socialists,
  2. communists, and other centre and left-wing
  3. parties against fascism. This policy was
  4. proposed by the Communist International 1935,
  5. and was adopted in France and Spain, where
  6. popular-front governments were elected 1936;
  7. that in France was overthrown 1938, and in
  8. Spain 1939. In Britain a popular-front policy
  9. was advocated by Stafford Cripps and others,
  10. but rejected by the Labour Party. The
  11. resistance movements in the occupied
  12. countries during World War II represented a
  13. revival of the popular-front idea, and in
  14. postwar politics the term tends to recur
  15. whenever a strong right-wing party can be
  16. counterbalanced only by an alliance of those
  17. on the left.
